- Teachers are aloof. The stay at the front of the room and keep their distance from students. Along with this goes the idea that a main goal of a teacher is to maintain order. The teacher and student seem to be on different planes.
- Effective teachers care for their students. Many times teachers are portrayed as being silly or aloof by the media. 'Good' teachers are shown to care about their students. These teachers care about their students education as well as their lives and well-being outside of and beyond school.
- Teachers are silly/stupid. Sometimes teachers are portrayed as being an object of ridicule for their students. These teachers are not concerned with education or their students, they are just there to do their job.

What are your opinions and reflections about these themes portrayed by the media? What defines an effective teacher? It seems as though teachers are portrayed in bad light even though society needs them to educate the next generation. Could it be that the bad teachers draw more attention than good effective teachers?
ReplyDeleteAs a future high school teacher, I think it is interesting to note the differences that we found in our searches. I did not see nearly as much focus on discipline in the high school as you seem to have seen in the elementary classroom. I saw a focus on grades and homework more than any focus on classroom management. I wonder why it is that people forsee more of a discipline problem in elementary students than in high school students? I personally think the discipline problems will be just as problematic in high school as in elementary school, if in a different way.
ReplyDeleteI did however find just as much of a focus on the silliness of teachers as you did. They are often portrayed as ridiculously unfair or just plain mean. I wonder what other similarities and differences there are between our findings?
I really like how you looked at the themes you found. I think that teachers can often be portrayed in a bad light, although sometime I wonder if its more a product of the students lack of discipline at home/unwillingness to learn and/or the parent who think their child is the best, rather than "bad teaching." I do agree that "good teachers" are portrayed as the ones that seem to genuinely care about their students and their successes as a whole. However, on the other end of that there's always the bad teachers, those that you just don't see results or found to be uncaring. It's been my experience that the opinions I hear about teachers are not about their actual teaching, but from my peers who just don't seem to understand that working hard equal success, and I think this is definitely a hindrance on the appearance of teachers.
ReplyDeleteI really like the way you put this. It's insane how teachers are one of the most important jobs of our society and they are so unappreciated and even mocked. I mean, I understand that it's probably because teachers are one of the professions that almost everyone in our society has felt antagonized by at some point. Actually, when I think of that, I understand why teachers seem to get such a bad rap. I was just harboring this hope that people could grow out of it a little and realize that teachers are the ones most responsible for shaping our future.
